Mambury Moor Nature Reserve

Mambury Moor is a proper working landscape rather than a manicured nature reserve - moorland that's managed for both conservation and grazing, a few miles inland from Bideford. You'll find open heath dotted with gorse and heather, rough grass tracks, and the kind of wind-swept views that make you understand why people fought over land in Devon centuries ago. It's walking country, essentially. The paths are easy enough but exposed, so weather matters - come on a clear day and you can see across the moor properly; come on one of those grey Devon afternoons and it's a bit bleak.

This is for walkers and anyone who likes their nature unvarnished. Families with small children might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes - there's no cafe, no facilities, no big vista payoff. But if you're staying at Broad Park Camping or Owl Valley Glamping nearby, it's a genuine alternative to the busy cliff paths. You could easily spend an hour or two here, picking your route and looking for birds of prey. The reserve is free to access, though it's worth checking locally about any seasonal closures or special management days when you arrive in Bideford.
