Malton Picnic Area

The River Wear cuts through a proper green corridor just outside Durham, and Malton Picnic Area sits right along it - a straightforward spot where you can pull over, stretch your legs, and actually feel the north east breeze without fighting for space. It's the kind of place locals know about but tourists often miss, which means you won't be dodging school groups or queuing for anything.

What you get here is riverside access, a few benches, and trees. Not fancy, not Instagram-ready, but genuine. Walkers use it as a halfway point on longer routes along the Wear. If you've got kids, they can burn off energy near the water - though keep an eye on them, it moves faster than it looks. The picnic tables work well enough if you've grabbed something from Durham town centre, though there's no café or facilities to speak of.

The real value comes if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Derecroft or Haystax are both within easy reach - and want a low-key morning or afternoon activity. Twenty minutes to an hour is about right; it's not somewhere you camp out all day. Go when the weather's decent and the light's decent. Off-season, it can feel a bit windswept and empty.

It slots nicely into a wider Durham itinerary if you're doing walks or visiting Beamish Museum. Don't expect destinations; expect a working breather between other things.
