Main Lake

The water at Main Lake catches the light differently depending on where you stand - flat and still one moment, then rippled by wind the next. It's a proper working reservoir near Huntingdon, and that matters because it doesn't have the manicured feel of some managed leisure lakes. This is a place people come to fish, walk the perimeter, and watch the birds that congregate here in numbers.

You can do a circuit of the whole thing, which takes the best part of an hour depending on pace and how often you stop. The paths are decent - not fancy, but well-maintained enough. Birdwatchers absolutely get the most from it, especially in spring migration and autumn when waders pass through. Families with young kids might find it a bit one-note after half an hour, unless they're genuinely into birds or fishing.

It's free to access, and there's no gate or ticket business - just turn up. Early morning is when it's best, when the water's calm and the light's proper golden. Midday can feel a touch exposed if the weather's turned.

If you're based at Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Main Lake works as a quieter alternative to the main lake when you want something a bit less busy. The two make a decent pairing - Grafham for facilities and activities, Main Lake for a more solitary walk. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Huntingdon-area break.
