Maidford Brake

The woodland at Maidford Brake sits just outside Malmesbury and offers a proper escape if you're after something low-key and genuinely quiet. It's not a manicured country estate - more a genuine stretch of mixed woodland where you can actually hear yourself think. The paths wind through beech and oak, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth the detour from nearby Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park.

This works well for families who want to tire out the kids without a formal visitor centre or queue. A couple of hours maximum though - it's not enormous, and once you've walked the main routes, there's not much more to discover. Dog walkers love it. Historians might find it less compelling than the grander estates around Wiltshire, but if you're keen on woodland ecology and spotting birds, you'll get something from it.

Access appears to be free, though exact opening times aren't confirmed locally - best ring ahead or check with Malmesbury before you go. It slots nicely into a park holiday from either Burton Hill or Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm, both within easy striking distance. Neither park will bore you senseless if the weather turns, and both let you base yourself somewhere proper while exploring the smaller woodland spots like this one.

Go early in the day if you want solitude. Late afternoon in autumn, when the light drops through the canopy, it's genuinely lovely.
