Maiden Castle

Iron Age earthworks sprawl across the hilltop southwest of Dorchester like giant sleeping serpents. Maiden Castle stands as Europe's largest hill fort, its massive ramparts rising and falling in waves that'll leave you properly breathless - and that's before you've even started the climb.

Walking the perimeter takes the better part of an hour, though you could easily spend half a day exploring every ditch and bank. The sheer scale hits you first - these aren't modest bumps but towering earth walls that once protected 5,000 people. Kids love scrambling up and down the slopes, turning the ancient defences into their personal adventure playground.

History buffs will appreciate the site's Roman connection - excavations uncovered evidence of the brutal siege that ended Celtic resistance here in AD 44. The story's told through information boards dotted around the site, though they're a bit sparse for my liking.

Free to wander and always open, this makes a cracking addition to any Dorset stay. The views across the countryside are lovely, stretching towards Weymouth on a clear day. Families staying at Haven Weymouth Bay or Seaview holiday parks will find it's barely four miles inland - perfect for a morning out before hitting the coast. Pack sturdy shoes and water; the chalk paths can be slippery when wet, and there's precious little shelter up here when the weather turns.
