Maiden Castle

Walk up to Maiden Castle and you're immediately struck by how much earth has been moved here - Iron Age folk really went to town building these defences. It's a proper hill fort just outside Chester, with multiple ramparts still visible after two thousand years, which is genuinely impressive when you stand there looking at the layers of earthwork.

What you're actually doing is walking around concentric defensive ditches and banks - there's no building to explore, no museum, just the landscape itself telling the story. The views from the top across the Cheshire plain are decent, especially on a clear day when you can pick out landmarks for miles. It takes a good hour to properly walk the perimeter and poke about, though you could do a quick circuit in twenty minutes if you're pressed.

History types will get the most from this. Kids might find it interesting for half an hour - climbing the banks appeals to them - but it's not a day-long attraction. Walkers absolutely should come, especially if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks like Pitch & Canvas or Manor Wood, both within a few miles. It's free and accessible year-round, though muddy after rain so bring proper boots.

Honestly, it's worth the detour if you're already exploring Chester. The Romans occupied it after the Iron Age, so it fits neatly into a wider historical tour of the area. But don't expect manicured grounds or interpretation boards - this is archaeology in its rawest form.
