Maesteg Welfare Park

The woodland trails at Maesteg Welfare Park wind through proper green space that feels worlds away from the industrial heritage of Port Talbot just down the road. It's not some manicured showpiece - this is genuine nature reserve territory with mature trees, open grassland, and enough paths to explore for a good couple of hours without feeling like you've walked the same ground twice.

The park works best for anyone who wants a straightforward walk without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots. Families with younger kids will find the terrain manageable, though pushchairs would struggle on some of the narrower tracks. Birdwatchers and photographers come here regularly, and the tree cover means it's brilliant even when the weather's being a bit grim - common enough in South Wales.

I'd suggest allowing two to three hours if you're planning to do a proper circuit, though you could dash round the main loop in forty minutes if you're pressed for time. Spring and early autumn are the best calls, when the light's decent and you're not battling through mud or swarms of midges.
