Lynton Way Park

Just east of Cambridge, Lynton Way Park is a proper slice of wetland and woodland that locals seem to keep quiet about. The reserve wraps around old gravel pits that have been left to do their thing, creating perfect habitat for waterbirds and dragonflies. You'll find yourself walking past reed beds and open water on paths that wind through young woodland - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most out of it. Bring binoculars and you might spot kingfishers, or if you're lucky, bitterns booming in the reeds. Kids can manage the terrain fine, though there's not much in the way of facilities or playgrounds, so it's not a destination in itself. More a solid add-on to a Cambridge day trip.

The paths are accessible and take between thirty minutes to two hours depending on which loop you fancy. Spring and early summer are the best times - the water comes alive with nesting birds and you won't be trudging through muddy ruts. It's free to visit, which is always welcome.
