Ludlow Museum

Ludlow Museum sits right in the heart of the medieval town, housed in a Georgian building that's frankly more interesting than some of what's inside. The collection covers local history from prehistoric times through to the present day - Roman finds, medieval artefacts, bits of pottery, the usual museum fare. It's small, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your tolerance for cramped display cases.

The real draw here is context. Walk around Ludlow itself first - the castle is the obvious stop - then pop into the museum to actually understand what you're looking at. Without that framework, it can feel a bit dry. Kids under ten will probably lose interest after twenty minutes, but older ones doing a school project on medieval England or interested in archaeology will find enough to keep them going for an hour.

Admission is modest and the staff are genuinely helpful. Timing-wise, hit it mid-morning when you've already done the castle, or on a rainy afternoon when the outdoor stuff isn't appealing. Being based at one of the nearby parks - Ludlow Touring & Holiday Home Park is just 1.6 miles away, or Monstay Farm if you fancy glamping - means you can take your time rather than squeeze it in between other attractions.

It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a Ludlow weekend it works well. The town itself is lovely for wandering and eating, so treat the museum as the quieter half of the day while you pace yourself.
