Ludlow Castle

The castle sits commanding the River Teme valley like it's been waiting 900 years for you to show up. Built in 1085, Ludlow Castle is one of those properly substantial ruins that actually rewards a proper poke around - not just a quick photo from the car park. You get real stone walls you can touch, a keep that's genuinely imposing, and views across the Marches that explain why anyone bothered building the thing in the first place.

The main courtyard lets you wander freely between the ruins of the great hall, the kitchen block, and the medieval chapel. History buffs will spend a good two hours deciphering the layers - the castle saw action in the Wars of the Roses and hosted Tudor princes. Families with younger kids might get restless after an hour unless they're into climbing on ancient stonework, which most are.

It's free to wander the outer areas, though there's a small charge if you want access to certain sections - worth checking before you go. Allow at least ninety minutes if you're taking it seriously. Spring and early autumn beat summer when tourist crowds get thick.

Ludlow town itself is cracking, full of timber-framed buildings and decent restaurants. If you're based at Ludlow Touring & Holiday Home Park just down the road - barely a mile and a half away - the castle is an obvious afternoon sortie. Even staying further out at places like Woodland Escapes or Home Farm, it's a straightforward drive. Pairs nicely with wandering Ludlow's high street or rambling the surrounding countryside.
