Luddington Hill

Walking boots are definitely recommended for this one - the paths up Luddington Hill can get proper muddy after rain, and it's a decent climb through mixed woodland. From the summit, you'll get sweeping views across the Cheshire Plain towards Northwich and beyond, with the industrial salt works creating an oddly compelling contrast to the rural landscape below.

Families with older children will enjoy the challenge, though the steep sections might defeat anyone under eight. The hill sits within easy reach of Delamere Forest, making it a cracking addition to a walking holiday in the area. Dog walkers love it here too - plenty of space for a good run once you reach the top.

Allow a good hour and a half for the round trip, more if you fancy lingering at the viewpoint. Best tackled on clear days when the visibility stretches for miles. The approach from the Northwich side offers the gentlest gradient, though keen walkers might prefer the more direct assault from the western flank.

Staying at Wild Shore Delamere or Delamere Lake Sailing & Holiday Park puts you within easy striking distance, and you could easily combine this with other forest walks. It's free to climb, naturally, and there's limited roadside parking at the base. Not exactly a mountain, but a proper little workout with rewarding views at the end.
