Walk into Lucas Dell Hole and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy gets so dense you lose track of time. It's a forest pocket east of Hitchin, the sort of place that feels genuinely wild despite being within reach of civilization.

The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter and fallen branches, making it feel less manicured than your typical country park. Paths wind through the trees, though they're not always obvious - you'll need to pay attention or you might miss a turning. Mature trees dominate, creating deep shade even on sunny days, so it's genuinely cooler in here.

This works best for people who actually like forests rather than those wanting an easy stroll. Kids need to be old enough to navigate uneven ground without constant hand-holding. The lack of facilities or signage means it's not a destination for whiling away an afternoon - allow an hour or so for a decent walk, longer if you're the type to stop and notice things.

If you're staying at Almshoe Glamping just 2.5 miles away, it's an obvious place to stretch your legs between breakfast and checking out. Jacks Hill Caravans is a bit further out at 5.2 miles, but still close enough for a morning woods walk. Neither park location gives you a reason to skip it.

Bring decent boots - the ground can be boggy - and don't expect facilities. It's free, it's accessible, and it's genuinely quiet. That's the whole appeal.
