Low Plantation

A modest stretch of woodland just outside Alford, Low Plantation isn't going to blow your mind, but it's exactly the sort of place that makes sense when you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks and fancy a proper walk without driving halfway across the county.

It's a working forest - managed commercially - so you're looking at rows of conifers rather than ancient woodland, but that's part of its appeal actually. The paths are decent and relatively flat, which means it suits families with younger kids or anyone after an easy hour's ramble. There's a decent sense of enclosure among the trees, which some people find lovely and others find a bit claustrophobic.

Go early or late in the day if possible. The morning light filtering through the conifers is genuinely nice, and you'll have the place mostly to yourself. Midday, especially in summer, can feel a bit dense and uninspiring.

On its own, it's not worth leaving the caravan for - but as part of a wider walk route linking Alford's market town centre with green space, it makes sense. The Layby Lincs, Cottage-waters, Woodthorpe Leisure Park and The Nurseries are all within easy striking distance, so if you're based at any of those, Low Plantation serves as a decent leg-stretcher. Don't expect drama, but do expect a proper forest walk and a bit of peace.
