Loughnabrick

The water at Loughnabrick sits still most days, ringed by low hills and the sort of quiet that makes you realise how little of Northern Ireland gets properly quiet. It's a modest lake near Ballymena - nothing dramatic, no Victorian boathouses or craft cafes - just a decent stretch of water where locals know the fishing's decent and walkers pass through without fanfare.

You'll find it useful as a loop walk rather than a destination in itself. The perimeter takes a solid hour on foot, passing through scrubby woodland and open moorland that shifts colour depending on the season. Summer's bog-standard green; autumn gets properly golden. The paths aren't fussy - they're functional, which means the ground can be wet and muddy even days after rain.

If you're staying at Ocean View Pods nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive over for an hour's amble. Birdwatchers and fishermen get genuine value from the place; families with young kids might find it a bit featureless after thirty minutes, if I'm being honest. There's nowhere to buy coffee or ice cream, no visitor centre, no interpretation panels - which is either exactly what you want or precisely what puts you off.

The real appeal is as part of a larger walk round Ballymena's countryside rather than a standalone trip. Combine it with the higher moorland walks nearby and you've got a proper half-day out. On a clear morning it's rather lovely. On a drizzly afternoon it feels like proper work.
