Lough Fad

Lough Fad sits about three miles south of Ballymena, a modest water body that punches above its weight for a quick escape from town. It's the sort of place locals know about and visitors overlook, which is entirely their loss.

The lake itself is ringed by woodland and offers a proper walk around the perimeter if you're after something gentle. The water's clean enough, the banks are accessible in places, and on a decent day the reflections are lovely. Families with young kids will manage it fine in an hour or so - nothing strenuous, just straightforward rambling with the option to spot waterfowl if you're lucky.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so you'll need to come prepared. Bring a packed lunch if you want to linger. The car park is small but usually has space midweek. It's free to visit, naturally.

If you're staying at Ocean View Pods just down the road, this makes an easy morning outing before heading to Ballymena proper for lunch. It won't exhaust you or your kids, which means you'll have energy left for other things. Don't expect white-knuckle views or dramatic walks.
