About Longplayer

You walk into a converted lighthouse on the Thames at Greenwich and immediately feel the weight of time shifting. Longplayer is a one-thousand-year music composition that started on New Year's Eve 1999 and won't finish until the year 2999. Genuinely. It's playing right now, will be playing tomorrow, and will keep playing long after you've left.

The space itself is minimal - this is about listening, not looking. Visitors sit in the circular chamber while the generative score unfolds through speakers. It's hypnotic rather than grand, and the genius is that you'll never hear the same piece twice. The composition is algorithmic, continuously creating new variations on Eno's original motifs. You could stay five minutes or five hours. Both feel valid.

This works brilliantly for anyone who's tired of conventional galleries - artists, sound designers, philosophy students, basically anyone capable of sitting in silence. Kids under twelve will likely find it tedious, but teenagers interested in experimental music or technology might genuinely love it. It's free, which is proper generous, though donations are welcome.

Allow whatever time you need. An hour is reasonable, but some people drift in and out across multiple visits. The lighthouse sits at Trinity Buoy Wharf, an artists' colony with studios and cafes, so you can easily build a half-day around it. Abbey Wood Experience Freedom Glamping is just five miles away - perfect for a longer weekend exploring Greenwich's parks and river walks.
