Long Wood

Walk through Long Wood and you're in proper old Suffolk woodland - the kind where the light filters through in shafts and the ground squelches a bit underfoot even in summer. It's east of Ipswich, close enough for a half-day outing but far enough to feel like you've actually left town.

This is a straightforward forest walk, nothing flashy. Broadleaf trees, quiet paths, the occasional bird call that makes you actually stop and listen. You'll find bluebells in spring if you time it right, and in autumn the canopy turns into something worth the muddy boots. It's the sort of place where you can lose an hour without noticing, which is rather the point.

Walkers will get the most from it - bring proper footwear and allow at least an hour to wander without rushing. Families with young kids won't find facilities or attractions within the wood itself, so it works best as a leg-stretch between other activities. History enthusiasts should know Suffolk's woodland heritage runs deep; these aren't new plantations but proper ancient woodland.

If you're staying at Polstead Country Park or Wheathill, both just under five miles away, Long Wood makes an easy morning visit. Combine it with exploring Ipswich's riverside or heading to one of the nearby parks for a fuller day. No admission fee, no visitor centre, no faffing about - just woodland as it should be. Go when it's dry, mind. The paths are lovely when the ground's firm.
