Long Shaw

Walk into Long Shaw and you're straight into proper woodland - tall oaks and beeches that block out most of the sky, with the ground soft underfoot from decades of leaf fall. It's a quiet spot near Faversham, the kind of place where you notice birdsong more than anything else.

The forest doesn't demand much of you. There are paths to follow, though nothing particularly dramatic - it's gentle walking territory rather than a scramble. Good for families who want their kids to burn off energy without anyone complaining their legs hurt. Locals use it as a cut-through, which tells you something; it's not a destination that'll stop traffic, but it's genuinely pleasant for an hour's wandering.

The real draw is simplicity. No visitor centre, no information boards telling you what you're looking at - just trees, quiet, and the occasional glimpse of light through the canopy. It works well as a break between other activities in the area. Painters Farm Camping Site sits just a couple of miles away, so if you're based there for a park holiday, this is an easy stroll to clear your head without driving anywhere.

Best in spring when the undergrowth greens up, or autumn when the leaves turn. Winter's muddy but manageable. Summer can feel a touch enclosed when everything's in full leaf, though that's also when it's cooler. Free to access, open whenever you fancy - there's nothing stopping you.
