Long Plantation

Long Plantation is a proper working forest just outside Daventry - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's mostly oak and beech, with decent footpaths winding through, and on a quiet weekday morning you might not see another soul. The walking is straightforward rather than dramatic, which suits families fine - kids can burn off some energy without parents worrying about tricky terrain or getting lost.

Historically it's been managed as productive woodland for centuries, so there's a sense of working landscape rather than pure nature reserve. That said, the canopy does close in nicely in summer, and if you're after somewhere to stretch your legs between stops on a Northamptonshire circuit, it'll do the job.

Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on your pace. The appeal is subtle - you won't come away raving, but on a grey day or between visits to the likes of Everdon Stubbs nearby, it's worth a wander. Bring the dog if you've got one; it's that kind of wood. If you're staying at EWE Glamping just down the road, frankly you could do worse than timing a forest walk before dinner. Access appears unrestricted, though it's worth checking locally since woodland can be closed during storm damage or managed timber work. Spring bluebells are worth catching if you're in the area March to April.
