Long Plantation (access land)

Long Plantation is a proper Norfolk woodland, the kind of place where you can actually breathe without hearing traffic. East of Norwich, it's managed as access land - meaning you can wander through without permission, though it pays to respect the place. The forest itself isn't dramatic. It's not ancient woodland with gnarled oaks or anything like that. What you get instead is straightforward mixed woodland: conifers, broadleaves, the occasional clearing where light floods in. Walking through it feels quieter than you'd expect given how close Norwich sits, and that's the appeal.

Right for walkers and anyone after a proper woodland walk without the faffing about with visitor centres or entry fees. Kids aged five and up will find it decent enough for an hour or so - there's usually a path to follow and fallen branches to investigate. Bring wellies if there's been rain; Norfolk drainage isn't its strong suit. Allow 60 to 90 minutes if you're moving at a leisurely pace and actually looking at things rather than just marching through.

It slots in well if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Top Farm Campsite and Deer's Mead are both within a couple of miles, making this an easy morning outing before heading off to explore the Norfolk Broads or Norwich itself. Not somewhere you'd plan a day around, but absolutely the sort of place that makes a holiday feel less like a checklist and more like actual time outdoors.
