Long Lown Wood

You could walk past Long Lown Wood without really noticing it - that's rather the point. This small forest sits just outside Peterborough in Northamptonshire, the sort of place locals know and outsiders stumble upon by accident while exploring the wider area.

It's proper woodland, dense in places, with decent walking paths that loop through if you're after a quieter hour away from the caravan parks. The canopy gets thick enough that even on bright days it feels cool and dim underfoot. Nothing dramatic - no viewpoints or viewfinder plaques - just the business of being a working wood. Oak and ash mostly, with enough scrub to feel wild without actually being wild.

Walkers will get the most from this rather than families after a day out. The paths don't lead anywhere in particular and that's fine - it's not the sort of place you pop to for three hours with packed sandwiches. An hour's meander, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough, and you've seen what there is to see. Bring wellingtons after rain; the ground holds water.

If you're based at Brightside Caravan Park for a week, it's a reasonable leg-stretch without driving far. Doesn't replace a proper country park visit, but it fills a gap on a morning when you want movement rather than destination. Go early if you can - the wood feels less boxed-in with space around you.
