Long Covert

Walk into Long Covert and you're swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where light filters through oak and beech in just the right way to make you forget you're only a few miles from Bridgnorth. It's a working forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means it feels genuinely wild despite being accessible enough for most fitness levels.

The paths wind through dense tree cover with enough variety to hold interest for a good couple of hours, though you could easily do a shorter loop if time's tight. Dog walkers love it here - there's room to let them off lead without constantly worrying about a cliff edge, and the ground's soft underfoot. Kids seem to either thrive on the exploration aspect or get bored once the novelty wears off, depending on temperament. Bring wellies if it's been wet; it holds moisture something chronic.

This works well as a half-day addition to a park stay at Stanmore Hall Touring Park rather than a sole destination. The forest doesn't have facilities - no café, no visitor centre - so come prepared with water and snacks. Free to access, no timings to worry about, just show up. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow pace: mossy banks, the occasional woodland bird, and stretches where you genuinely can't hear traffic. Not dramatic or showy, but proper restorative. Worth the detour if you're already in the area.
