Long Copse

A proper walk through beech and oak woodland just outside Newbury - that's Long Copse. It's the sort of place that feels genuinely remote despite being within spitting distance of town, with dappled light filtering through the canopy and proper quiet pressing in around you. The forest floor is thick with leaf mould, roots snake across the paths, and there's a real sense of getting into something wild without needing a map and a packed lunch.

Walkers will love this. It's woodland in the proper sense - not a manicured nature reserve with information boards every fifty metres, but actual forest where you can lose an hour quite happily. The paths wind through without being brutally obvious, and in autumn the colour is genuinely worth the trip. Spring brings bluebells and birdsong that'll justify the early start.

It's free to access and you can spend as little as forty minutes pottering about or a good couple of hours if you want to really wander. Bring sensible shoes - it gets muddy, particularly after rain. The whole Hampshire woodland feel pairs brilliantly with a stay at Hollington Park Glamping just over four miles away. You can do a proper forest morning, head back for late breakfast, and still have time to explore other local patches. Not Instagram-famous, not crowded, just good honest woodland that does what it says on the tin.
