Long Canal

The Long Canal cuts through County Antrim like a long breath - a proper walk that rewards you with water, woodland, and the odd surprise around each bend. It's a nature reserve, which means you get birds, aquatic plants, and the kind of quiet that's genuinely rare near a town. The canal itself runs between Antrim and Newtownabbey, following an old towpath that's been left more or less to its own devices.

Walking it is the whole point. You can take a section or do the longer stretch depending on energy levels and what the weather's doing - the surface is manageable but can get muddy after rain. Allow two to three hours if you're taking it seriously, stopping to watch water birds and get your bearings. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's the kind of place that grows on you: reflections, rustling reeds, the occasional angler settled in for the afternoon.

Walkers will get the most from this - families with younger kids might find it a bit repetitive after an hour unless they're into spotting birds. If you're staying at Six Mile Water or Blair's Castlewood nearby, both less than a mile away, the canal is an obvious morning walk before breakfast or an evening stretch of the legs. It's free to access and there's no particular best time to visit, though spring brings nesting activity and summer offers decent canopy cover.

It won't blow your mind, but it's solid territory for a half-day outing if you're based in the caravan parks around Antrim.
