Logierait Mill

There's not much left of Logierait Mill, and that's rather the point. What remains of this 18th-century grain mill sits beside the River Tummel a few miles south of Pitlochry, and it's the sort of place you'll want to visit if you're genuinely interested in industrial archaeology rather than expecting a fully restored attraction with a gift shop.

The ruins tell the story of Perthshire's milling heritage - water wheels, grinding stones, the machinery that once processed grain for the surrounding countryside. The river itself is the real draw here; it's properly lovely, and the walk to reach the site takes you through riverside woodland that's worthwhile in its own right.

Truth be told, you won't spend more than 30 minutes here unless you're a real history buff. What you get is an atmospheric ruin and a decent stretch of riverbank. It's free to visit, which helps, and works well if you're already exploring the Pitlochry area. The nearby campsite at Grandtully - just 3.9 miles away - and Milton Of Fonab Caravan Park make logical bases. A morning potter round the mill and ruins, then head into town for proper lunch.

Walkers will find it rewarding rather than strenuous. Families with young children might struggle with the "not much to touch or do" factor, though the river keeps things interesting. Bring your camera for the light filtering through the old stonework - that's genuinely striking. Best visited on a clear day when the water levels aren't too high.
