Logan Botanic Garden

The walled garden at Logan sits about five miles south of Stranraer, and it's one of those places that surprises you with how sheltered and warm it feels. You walk through the gate expecting typical Scottish seaside windswept terrain, but instead you're surrounded by tree ferns, cabbage palms, and plants that look like they've got no business surviving this far north. The Gulf Stream does the heavy lifting here.

It's genuinely worth the drive if you're into plants or you need a couple of hours away from the kids running riot. Adults who garden will spend a proper afternoon wandering the different zones - the jungle bit, the woodland walks, the borders. Parents with younger children might find it a touch quiet after an hour unless they're the type who actually want some peace.

You can wander the grounds at your own pace, and there's enough distance between sections to make it feel less like a park and more like discovering pockets of different places. The views out toward the coast are decent without being dramatic. Go on an overcast day and you'll have the place almost entirely to yourself.

If you're camping or self-catering nearby - Sands of Luce Holiday Park is close by - it's an easy morning trip before heading to the beach at Luce Bay or exploring more of Dumfries and Galloway. Not essential, but if you're in the area and the weather's cooperating, it fills a day nicely.
