Lodge Copse

The forest floor at Lodge Copse is soft underfoot, carpeted in moss and leaf litter that's been accumulating for decades. It's a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured nature trail - the sort of place where you half expect to stumble upon something ancient just off the path.

The trees here are mature and substantial, creating that cathedral-like quality you get in old forests. Light filters through the canopy in layers, shifting throughout the day. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no faffing about - just woodland as it is. That's either exactly what you want or precisely what will bore you after twenty minutes.

Walkers will get the most from Lodge Copse. It sits conveniently close to Rickmansworth, making it a solid half-day option if you're staying in the area rather than a destination in itself. The forest is manageable for families with older kids who can handle muddy paths, though it's not the sort of place young children will find much to do beyond climbing trees and kicking leaves.

If you're basing yourself at Lights Camera Glamping just four miles away, Lodge Copse works nicely as a morning escape before heading to busier attractions elsewhere in Buckinghamshire. Allow a couple of hours for a decent wander. Wear proper boots - it can be boggy in places, particularly near the deeper sections. There's no obvious entrance fee, though do check locally before you go, as that might have changed.
