Lochy Bay

The water at Lochy Bay sits still most mornings, reflecting the surrounding hills with an almost unnerving clarity. It's a proper working marina just outside Fort William, where fishing boats and leisure craft share the moorings, and you can actually watch people living their water-based lives rather than just passing through on a coach tour.

There's something refreshing about a marina that hasn't been turned into a shopping destination. You can walk the waterfront, watch boats coming and going, grab a coffee from one of the small cafes nearby, and soak in the Highland air without the tourist theatre. It's the kind of place locals use, which means it feels authentic.

You won't spend hours here unless you're genuinely interested in boats or planning to eat somewhere along the water. Most visitors allocate 30 minutes to an hour - time enough for a wander and a breather from Fort William town centre. The light here is excellent for photography, especially in late afternoon when the mountains turn golden.

If you're based at Ben Nevis Holiday Park, just six miles away, Lochy Bay works nicely as a quiet break from hiking. It's close enough for a half-day trip without eating into your mountain time. The contrast between the peaks and the calm water is genuinely pleasing. Worth the short drive if you want somewhere to decompress that isn't another visitor centre.
