Lochwinnoch Public Park

The loch itself is the star turn here - a proper freshwater expanse ringed by woodland that actually feels remote despite being barely 30 minutes from Glasgow. Lochwinnoch Public Park is run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and functions as a working nature reserve, not a manicured attraction, which means the paths can get muddy and the birdlife takes priority over the tourists.

You get two visitor centres to explore, though calling them grand would be generous - they're practical bases with viewing scopes pointed at the water. The real draw is the walking. There's a circular route that takes the best part of an hour and a half if you're not stopping constantly, though you absolutely will because the birdwatchers here seem to spot things invisible to the rest of us. Winter brings geese and whooper swans; summer's quieter but the Caledonian pine forest is reason enough to visit. Kids won't tire of it immediately - there's water, there's wildlife, there's room to roam - but it's not a day-long proposition unless you're genuinely keen on spotting a great crested grebe.

Free to enter, which makes it a natural fit before or after The Pods at Auchenhean, the five-star glamping spot just under two miles away. Best visited early morning when the birds are active and you'll dodge the weekend crowds. Bring binoculars if you've got them; the loch reveals itself slowly to those who wait.
