Lochshore park

Lochshore Park sits right on the edge of Lochwinnoch, a proper wetland reserve that sprawls across marshy ground and shallow water. You're here to watch birds, mainly - the loch attracts everything from lapwings to grebes depending on the season, and the hides let you get close without spooking them. Walking the perimeter takes a good hour or so if you're doing it properly, stopping at each viewing point. The paths are flat and well-maintained, though they can get boggy after rain, so decent footwear matters. Bring binoculars. Seriously. Without them you'll spend half your time squinting at distant specks. The reserve is free to access, which makes it an easy detour if you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean nearby - only a couple of miles away. It's brilliant for birdwatchers and families with older kids who can handle a bit of standing still and waiting quietly. Younger children might find it a touch slow unless they're already keen on wildlife. Winter's when the numbers really build up, but summer brings breeding birds and dragonflies if you're into insects. Go early in the morning when the light's better and the birds are most active. You'll share the paths with other enthusiasts but it never feels rammed. The Scottish Lowlands aren't known for drama - this is gentle countryside walking, not mountain scenery - but that's rather the point. Sometimes you want low-key and undisturbed.
