Lochan Mhàiri

A small loch tucked into the Highland landscape south of Beauly, Lochan Mhàiri sits quietly without the tourist machinery of its bigger neighbours. The water's dark and still, ringed by rough moorland and birch scrub - it's the sort of place where you'll hear red grouse rather than tour coaches.

The real appeal here is walking. There's a decent circuit around the loch itself, nothing too demanding, and the views back towards the surrounding hills reward the effort without being spectacular enough to draw crowds. On a clear day you get a sense of the Highlands' proper scale. On a dreich one - which is roughly half the time - you get atmosphere and solitude in equal measure.

It's less of a destination and more of a worthwhile addition to a day walking south from Beauly. Walkers will get the most from it; families with young children might find it a bit exposed and featureless, though if you've got decent boots and patience it's doable. There's no visitor facility here - no café, no car park in the formal sense - so come prepared.

If you're based at Cannich Woodland Camping and Caravan Park just down the road, it's an easy morning outing. Similarly good if you're staying at Loch Ness Glamping and want something quieter than the famous loch itself. Give yourself two hours minimum for a proper walk around the shore, longer if you want to explore the higher ground beyond.
