Lochan Liath

A small mountain loch tucked into the hills above Tarbert, Lochan Liath is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The water sits dark and still against moorland, ringed by low peaks that catch the light in that particular Scottish way - grey-green one moment, purple-bronze the next depending on the cloud.

It's a straightforward walk from Tarbert, nothing too demanding, and the appeal is simple: isolation and space. You won't find facilities or crowds here. There's no café, no car park, no visitor centre - just a loch and the landscape around it. That's rather the point. Walkers get the most from this one, especially those comfortable with rough terrain and navigation. The views back towards Kintyre are decent, though they're not the dramatic sea-loch vistas you'd get elsewhere on the peninsula.

Couples looking for a quiet spot will find it peaceful. Families with young children might find the walk tiresome for the reward - there's not much to do once you arrive besides admire the water and turn back. Give yourself a couple of hours return from Tarbert, longer if you're meandering.

It works well as part of a broader walk around the area, particularly if you're staying at Tarbert Holiday Park and want to get properly away from the caravan site. The Gather, a few miles closer to Lochgilphead, is another decent base nearby if you're doing a few days exploring the Kintyre peninsula. Lochan Liath isn't Instagram-worthy, but that's exactly why it's worth the trip.
