Lochan Àiridh-shamhraidh

This small, quiet loch sits tucked into the hills above Taynuilt, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The walk in takes about twenty minutes from the road - nothing too strenuous, but proper muddy underfoot when it's been wet. The water itself is dark and still, ringed by low mountains that catch the light beautifully in late afternoon. There's a lonely bothy nearby if you're into that sort of thing.

It's worth the trek if you're after solitude rather than views that'll blow your mind. Walkers will appreciate the gentle approach through moorland, and it's quiet enough that you might spot red deer if you're lucky. Families with younger kids might find the muddy path annoying - it's not a casual stroll - but it's nowhere near as demanding as some of the bigger Argyll lochs.

Allow an hour or so for the walk and a proper sit-down by the water. Go early or late to avoid the midges if you're visiting between May and September. The loch is free to access, naturally. It pairs well with staying at Loch Awe Camping Pods five miles away - you could easily combine it with a visit to the bigger, more dramatic Loch Awe itself just down the valley. It's the sort of Scottish spot that reminds you why people leave their hearts here.
