Lochan Breac-liath

You'll find Lochan Breac-liath tucked into the Argyll landscape about four miles from Inveraray, a proper wee loch that doesn't announce itself. The water sits dark and reflective, ringed by hills that shift colour depending on the light - one minute slate grey, the next almost purple when clouds mass overhead. It's the kind of spot where you can actually hear silence.

This is a walker's lake rather than a resort one. There's no café, no admission charge, no facilities beyond what the landscape provides. Most people come for the walk around the shore or as a detour from the bigger trails that lace through Argyll. The setting appeals strongly to landscape photographers and anyone after a bit of genuine solitude - though on weekends you'll spot the odd angler casting hopefully from the banks.

If you're staying at Fyne Glamping or The Pod Over By - both sitting just down the road - add it to your morning walk. The whole circuit takes roughly an hour depending on how much you dawdle, and it's manageable for families with older kids, though the terrain is rough in patches. Spring and autumn work best; summer midges can be fierce, and winter brings genuine exposure if the weather turns.

Don't expect drama or views that stop you dead. This is understated Argyll - the kind of place that rewards a slow approach and rewards you by being genuinely quiet.
