Lochan an Torra Bhuidhe

Drive past Drumnadrochit and you'll spot the signs pointing towards this small but properly rewarding loch tucked into the Highland landscape. Lochan an Torra Bhuidhe isn't dramatic - no steep cliffs or thundering waterfalls - but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place you come to when you want quiet over spectacle.

The walk in is straightforward, taking maybe twenty minutes from the car park through moorland that opens up to reveal water so still it barely looks real. Walkers and photographers get the most from it, particularly those with a decent camera who want to catch the light bouncing off the surface at different times of day. Early morning works best if you're after that moody Highland atmosphere without the midges.

There's no infrastructure here - no cafe, no visitor centre, no formal facilities - which means it stays relatively undisturbed. That also means you need to come properly prepared: waterproof jacket, sturdy boots, and a flask if you plan to linger. Allow an hour and a half if you're not rushing, though you could do it quicker.
