Lochan an Eireannaich

You'll find this small loch tucked into the hills above Lochearnhead, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort to get there. The walk in takes you through proper Scottish countryside - moorland and scattered trees - before the water suddenly appears, dark and still against the surrounding slopes. It's not massive, and that's rather the point. This feels like your own discovery rather than a ticked-off tourist spot.

The loch works best for walkers and photography types. You get cracking views across the water to the higher peaks beyond, especially in afternoon light when the shadows pick out the contours of the hills. It's quiet too - far enough from the main road that you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself. Allow a couple of hours if you're coming from Lochearnhead; the walk isn't arduous but it's not a five-minute stroll either.

If you're staying at Balquhidder Braes Holiday Park just down the way, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. The park itself sits in the Braes of Balquhidder, cracking Trossachs country, so you're well positioned for hill walking and water-based activities already. The loch adds another string to your bow without the crowds you'd get at Loch Earn or Loch Katrine. Worth the detour if you've got legs and aren't after a manicured visitor experience.
