Loch Uanagan

The water here is dark and still, ringed by conifer forest that rises steeply on three sides. Loch Uanagan sits just outside Fort Augustus, tucked into the Highland landscape in a way that feels properly remote despite being minutes from the main A82. It's a small loch - not dramatic, not famous, but genuinely peaceful.

You can walk the perimeter or just find a spot on the shore to sit. The water reflects the trees and sky so completely it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. On a still day it's almost meditative. On a windy one, less so. The path around isn't particularly marked, and parts are boggy underfoot, so proper boots matter.

This is for walkers and photographers rather than families wanting a day out with activities. Kids might manage a short walk, but there's nothing to do once you're here except look. History buffs won't find much either. What you get is solitude and straightforward natural beauty - the sort of place locals know and visitors miss.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Loch Ness Holiday Park just down the road, a morning walk here works well before heading back for lunch. Don't factor in more than an hour unless you're committed to the full circuit. Free to visit, no facilities on site. Spring and autumn are quietest. It won't blow your mind, but it's worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy something off the usual tourist trail.
