Loch Skiach

The water at Loch Skiach sits perfectly still on most days, reflecting the surrounding hillsides like a mirror. It's a proper quiet spot near Pitlochry - the kind of place where you'll hear birdsong rather than traffic, and that's rather the point.

This isn't a destination with facilities or visitor infrastructure. There's no café, no shop, no charging station. What you get is the loch itself - freshwater, scenic, and the sort of place locals come to fish or simply breathe. The walk around it takes patience and decent boots; the terrain can be boggy, and there's no manicured path system. But if you're after a genuine slice of Perthshire countryside without the crowds of Loch Tay, it's worth the detour.

Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes. Walkers and fishing enthusiasts will get much more from it. The loch works brilliantly as a half-day venture if you're based at one of the local parks - Pitilie Pods is only 4.5 miles away and well-reviewed. Pair it with a morning exploring Pitlochry's town centre, then head out here for quieter afternoon air.

Timing matters. Spring and early summer give you the best light and wildlife activity. Winter brings wind and rain that can make the approach genuinely miserable. Admission is free - there's no gatehouse or charge - though you'll need to find your own way to the loch from the road. Allow two to three hours if you're planning to walk the perimeter.
