Loch Park

The water at Loch Park sits dark and still, reflecting whatever sky decides to show up on the day you visit - and in Aberdeenshire, that could be anything. This is a proper working loch rather than a tourist attraction pumped with facilities, which means you get something real: moorland banks, the Highlands pressing in around you, and the kind of quiet that actually feels restorative instead of manufactured.

It's the sort of place walkers come to loop around the shore, or anglers bring their kit for brown trout. Families with small children might find an hour here pleasant enough - there's space to run about and water to look at - but it won't grip them the way a theme park would. Teenagers more interested in their phones than fresh air will be restless within minutes.

The nearest proper town is Keith, which sits about where you'd expect in the middle of rural Aberdeenshire. That's worth knowing if you need a coffee or a decent pub meal before or after.

If you're based at either Hillside Havens or Cairnty Lodges - both excellent spots, especially Cairnty if you want glamping with hot tubs - Loch Park works as a morning walk or an excuse to get outside between activities. Don't expect crowds or amenities. What you do get is genuine Highland scenery without the postcards. It's the kind of place you stumble across and think, 'Right, this'll do nicely for an hour.'
