Loch of Bushta

A short drive south of Thurso takes you to Loch of Bushta, a proper slice of Highland landscape that doesn't require a guidebook or an entrance fee to enjoy. It's a modest freshwater loch surrounded by moorland and low hills - the sort of place that reveals itself slowly as you walk around the shore rather than hitting you with views all at once.

Walkers will find the circuit rewarding, especially on a clear day when the water reflects the surrounding hills. The terrain isn't punishing, which makes it decent for families with younger legs, though there's not a visitor centre or café to anchor a half-day trip. Bring a picnic and settle by the water if you want to make a proper outing of it.

It's genuinely quiet - you won't battle crowds here - but that also means you need to bring your own entertainment. Birdwatchers and photographers get more from a visit than casual drivers passing through. Allow two to three hours for a gentle circuit; less if you're just stopping for twenty minutes.

If you're based at Little Croft Highlands campsite nearby, it's an easy half-hour potter and a good break from tent life. On its own, it's not worth detouring specifically for, but paired with the wider Caithness landscape and Thurso's beaches, it slots in nicely. Go on a day when the weather's cooperating - grey skies can make it feel a bit bleak.
