Loch nan Ceard Beag

A narrow strip of water tucked into the Argyll hills, Loch nan Ceard Beag sits quietly a few miles northeast of Inveraray - the kind of place most tourists miss entirely while heading for the bigger lochs. There's not much here in terms of facilities or formal attractions, which is precisely why it's worth the detour if you're staying in the area.

The loch itself is small and intimate, surrounded by moorland and woodland that feels properly remote despite being only a short drive from civilisation. It's the sort of spot where you can actually hear birdsong without a coach party drowning it out. Walking the perimeter takes maybe an hour, depending on how many times you stop to look across the water. The views aren't dramatic - no jagged peaks reflected in the glass - but they're genuinely peaceful.

Families with kids will find it manageable but maybe not thrilling for more than a quick visit. Walkers and photographers, though, will appreciate the space and quietness. The moorland around it is open enough for decent views without requiring serious scrambling or navigation skills.

If you're glamping at Fyne Glamping just up the road, this makes a lovely morning or late afternoon walk before heading back for dinner. Bring your own packed lunch - there's nothing nearby. Spring and early summer are best, when the water catches the light properly and the midges haven't woken up yet. Leave time to loop round rather than just visiting the nearest point.
