Loch nam Breac Dearga

You'll find this modest Highland loch tucked away near Drumnadrochit, away from the madness of the main Loch Ness tourist trail. It's a proper water - dark and still, ringed by rough moorland and conifer plantations. The walk to reach it involves some rough ground and a bit of grunt, but that's rather the point. You get solitude, which is gold dust in the Highlands these days.

It's a fishing loch primarily, so you'll see anglers perched at the water's edge on any decent day. The shoreline is peaty and boggy in places - waterproof boots aren't optional. The light here does something special on overcast afternoons, turning the water pewter grey against the dark vegetation. Not Instagram-gold like Loch Ness, but far more interesting for anyone who actually wants to experience the Highlands rather than tick off a box.

Walkers and serious photographers will get the most from it. Families with young children might find the access tricky and the lack of facilities limiting. Allow two to three hours if you're making a proper outing of it, including the approach. There's no admission charge - this is wild country, not a visitor attraction with a gift shop.
