Loch na Speinge

The water at Loch na Speinge sits absolutely still on a calm day - so reflective you'd swear you could walk across it. This small, secluded loch near Taynuilt in Argyll is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately hunt for, and that's precisely what makes it worth the detour.

It's a straightforward walk in from the road, taking maybe twenty minutes to reach the shoreline properly. The landscape around it is proper Highland - rough moorland, distant hills, the kind of light that changes every five minutes. There's no café, no facilities, no crowds. Just water, rock, and silence.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend three hours here - but it's an excellent leg-stretcher on the way to or from somewhere else. Photographers might linger longer, especially in golden hour. Families with very young kids might find it a bit quiet and remote for their liking; there's nothing to actually do, which some will love and others will find dull.

If you're camping at Loch Awe Camping Pods just down the road, Loch na Speinge makes a proper nice morning walk before breakfast. The whole area around Taynuilt is scattered with lochs and glens - this one just happens to be less visited than its neighbours, which is entirely its charm. Go when the weather's settled. A grey, drizzly day will test your patience.
