Loch na Ruighe Duibhe

The dark waters of Loch na Ruighe Duibhe sit quietly in the Highlands, a short drive south of Fort Augustus. It's one of those Scottish lochs that doesn't make the postcards, which is precisely why it's worth seeking out. The loch itself is modest in size but surrounded by proper Highland scenery - moorland rolling down to the water's edge, with hills rising beyond. There's a car park at the northern end, and from there you can walk the shoreline or simply sit and take in the stillness. It's the kind of place where you hear birdsong properly.

Walkers will find this rewarding. The terrain isn't punishing, and the walk around the loch takes a couple of hours at an easy pace. If you're staying at Cannich Woodland Camping or Loch Ness Holiday Park - both are only minutes away - this makes a cracking afternoon outing without the crowds you'd find at Loch Ness itself. Fair warning though: come prepared for Highland weather. The water is dark because the peat-stained lochs up here are moody at the best of times.

Historically it's quieter than some of the bigger lochs in the area, which means fewer tourists and fewer boats. Families with younger children might find the novelty wears off after an hour, but if you want a genuine slice of Highland peace rather than a spectacle, Loch na Ruighe Duibhe delivers. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.
