Loch na h-Innse Odhair

The water here is so clear you can see straight through to the bottom - it's one of those lochs that makes you stop mid-walk and actually look. Loch na h-Innse Odhair sits in the wild country south of Durness, where the landscape gets properly remote. It's a small loch, nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. Most people thundering up the A838 towards Cape Wrath barely notice it exists.

You're looking at a peaceful spot that rewards a slight detour. The water reflects the surrounding moorland and distant hills, and in decent light it's genuinely lovely to stand by. There's no visitor infrastructure here - no car park, no facilities, no crowds - which means you need to know where you're going and have decent map sense. Walking types heading into the Durness hills will find it worthwhile as a waypoint rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at Sango Sands Oasis - and it's a strong spot for a Highland base - this is about a 45-minute drive south. It works best as part of a broader day exploring the moorland between Durness and Scourie rather than as a solo trip. The approach takes you through genuine wilderness, which is either brilliant or bleak depending on weather and your mood. Autumn can be atmospheric if you time it right. Summer midges, however, can be murder.

Free to visit, obviously. Allow two hours if you're making it a proper stop, less if you're just passing through. Honest assessment: you won't regret seeing it, but you won't be devastated if you miss it either.
