Loch na Craoibhe Chaorainn

The water here is proper dark and still, ringed by Scottish pine that catches the light in a way that makes you want to sit quietly for twenty minutes. Loch na Craoibhe Chaorainn sits inland from Inveraray, tucked into Argyll landscape that doesn't shout about itself. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no facilities - just a loch and the hills around it.

Walkers and photographers will find plenty to do. The shoreline's accessible enough for a gentle ramble, and if you're lucky with light and weather, the reflections are worth the camera. It's the sort of place where you notice small things - birds lifting off the water, the particular shade of the surrounding forest. Not a destination on its own, but absolutely worth the detour if you're spending time in the area.

Inveraray's only a short drive away, which makes this a sensible add-on to a broader Argyll day out. If you're staying at Fyne Glamping nearby, you could walk here in decent weather, though it's a trek. Allow an hour for a gentle explore round the water, longer if you're the type who sits and watches things.

Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the loch settles. Summer weekends bring a few locals and fishermen, but it never feels crowded. Bring a waterproof though - the Scottish weather has opinions.
