Loch na Beiste

The drive to Loch na Beiste takes you through some of the most remote country in the northwest Highlands, not far from Durness. It's a modest freshwater loch - don't expect the dramatic scale of somewhere like Loch Ness, but that's rather the point. What you get instead is genuine solitude and the sort of raw Highland landscape that makes you understand why people write poetry about Scotland.

The loch itself sits in open moorland with Ben Hope visible in the distance on clear days. It's a proper walker's destination rather than a casual stop-off. The shoreline isn't particularly dramatic, but the water's dark and still, and on a quiet afternoon you might be entirely alone. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching - golden eagles and greenshanks are regulars here.

Allow two hours minimum if you're doing even a basic circuit, and wear proper boots - the ground gets boggy. There's nowhere official to park, though locals use a rough pull-in near the approach. It's free to visit, naturally enough. Summer's your best bet weather-wise, though midges can be ferocious in July and August. November through March sees fewer visitors and better light for photography, if you don't mind the cold.

If you're based at Sango Sands Oasis near Durness - and it's a strong choice for a Highland base - this makes a worthwhile half-day outing. It won't thrill those after honeypot attractions, but for anyone wanting to experience the Highlands properly, without crowds, it's time well spent.
