Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre

The raptors here are absolutely magnificent - golden eagles, red kites, owls that'll lock eyes with you from ten feet away. It's a proper raptor experience rather than a sprawling zoo, focused entirely on birds of prey, which means you're not trudging around acres of enclosures for mediocre viewing. The Centre sits just outside Alexandria in Argyll, and the whole thing works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're based at Loch Lomond Retreat or Lomond Woods Holiday Park nearby.

You'll spend a solid two to three hours here if you take it seriously - watching the handlers work, learning about breeding programmes, seeing these birds in flight if there's a display on. Kids absolutely love it, though younger ones might find the noise startling when a 4kg golden eagle takes off above your head. The handlers are genuinely knowledgeable, not just parroting facts.

It's the kind of place that feels small but punches above its weight. You could knock it out in 90 minutes if you're in a rush, but the experience is better when you linger - watch a bird's head turn 270 degrees, clock the intensity in their gaze. Worth building into a wider Loch Lomond trip rather than a standalone destination, but if raptors are your thing, it's absolutely worth the short drive from Alexandria. Best visited outside school holidays if crowds bother you.
