Loch Ille Mhor

The water at Loch Ille Mhor sits dark and still, surrounded by Caledonian forest that feels genuinely remote despite being only a short drive from Grantown-on-Spey. It's a proper Highland loch - no theme park nonsense, just open water and ancient pines reflected back at you on a calm day. You can walk the shoreline, fish if you've got a permit, or simply sit with binoculars hoping to spot red squirrels and golden eagles. The loch itself is small enough that you won't spend all afternoon here, but that's rather the point. An hour, maybe two if you're keen on photography or serious birding.

This works beautifully as a half-day stop if you're based at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park nearby - close enough that it's not a mission, far enough that it feels like you've actually gone somewhere. Walkers will find it satisfying; families with very young children might find the appeal a bit limited unless they're the type to spend an hour turning over rocks and spotting water boatmen. History buffs won't find much to grip them. The real draw is the Highlands themselves - the light, the quiet, the sense of space. If you're after that particular kind of Scottish landscape, this delivers it without the crowds you'd get at somewhere like Loch Morlich. Go on a clear day if you can. The cloud tends to roll in thick and fast, and there's not much point being here if you can't see the treeline.
