Loch Duisk

Loch Duisk sits quietly in the hills above Newton Stewart, and honestly, it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The water reflects whatever the Scottish sky throws at it - grey and moody one moment, almost silver the next. It's small enough that you can take it in properly, without that overwhelming feeling you get at some of the bigger lochs.

The main appeal here is the walk around it. Nothing too taxing, but proper rewarding. You get decent views across the water, and the surrounding forest gives it an intimate feel. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching - ospreys and red kites aren't uncommon. Families with reasonably confident walkers will enjoy it; toddlers might find the path a bit uneven in places.

If you're staying at Galloway Forest Holiday Park just down the road, Loch Duisk makes an excellent half-day outing. The park itself sits in the heart of the forest, so you're already in the right landscape for exploring. The loch pairs well with a wider day exploring the forest trails - you're not looking at hours here, more like a couple of hours wandering and absorbing.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. No cafe, no car park - just a pull-in and a path. That's rather the point, really. Best visited when the weather's decent; it gets bleak in winter.
